Dog owners are invited to lace up their walking boots and bring their pets to the Shireburn Arms, an historic inn at Hurst Green near Clitheroe, for a canine-friendly break.

This is a great place for a wonderful breakfast and then going off for the day

Said Didier Vincent, Shireburn Arms general manager: “The Shireburn is the perfect location for dog owners and walking enthusiasts. It is located within the picturesque Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland, with many classic routes including the historic Tolkien Trail right on its doorstep – making it a great base for a two night walking getaway.”

“We also understand that dogs are part of the family and many owners like to bring their pets away with them, which is why we offer dog friendly rooms.

“Walkers can start their day with a generous full English breakfast and then head off into the great outdoors and forget the frantic pace of everyday life.”

Visitors to the area can explore the connections with JRR Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings, and walk in his footsteps along a 5.5 mile circular route. It is said that he wrote part of his great work while staying in the grounds of Stonyhurst College, a famous public school.

Dogs love staying at the Shireburn Arms

It starts from the war memorial in the centre of Hurst Green and takes in the historic Stonyhurst College as well as local landmarks such as Cromwell’s Bridge. The walk offers stunning views of Pendle Hill and the Ribble Valley.

Said Heidi: “The route finishes back at the Shireburn where walkers can enjoy the picturesque garden patio, with stunning valley views and a refreshing brew – of either the tea or alcoholic variety.” Other walking routes could include a tour of the Trough of Bowland, Gisburn Forest and the Pendle Way.
