With golf reportedly growing in popularity by 17% over the last year, a home on a golf course could prove to be an excellent investment and a great lifestyle choice.

The IAGTO comments on three years of consecutive growth for global golf tourism and destinations as diverse as the Dominican Republic, Malaysia and Mexico have all reported year-on-year growth. Various sources indicate that there are well over 31,000 full-length golf facilities in the world, of which there are 6,560 in Europe, according to figures produced by the European Golf Association.

Roger Beale, Director of Golf at Royal Westmoreland in Barbados and a former member of the Canadian Tour is not surprised that golf is growing in popularity. He remarks: “Golf is popular because you can involve yourself on numerous levels. You can be casual or very serious, it all depends on how much time and effort you have to put in.

“Golf has many hooks – the scenery, the social side, the competition, the equipment, and the travelling. It allows you many avenues to keep you from being bored. Because of the handicapping system, you can play with anyone and enjoy a game, regardless if the person is better than you, older or younger.”

Roger notices the effect of big tournaments on his members. “Big events definitely help make golfers keener. It creates a buzz around the club and it helps people embrace the game.”

So what are the advantages of buying a home on a golf course, apart from the obvious one of proximity to the course for keen golfers? Kim Goddard, Head of Sales at Royal Westmoreland, a 750 acre golfing estate and residential community says: “One of the biggest advantages is the fact that the view from your home and space around the course naturally has more green space, is protected from further building and is perfectly maintained.”

Kim continues: “Interestingly, 70% of the people that buy at Royal Westmoreland aren’t actually golfers, but they buy because of the space, the landscaping, the security of a gated resort and the other facilities on offer. A home in a golf resort offers a multi-generation lifestyle and is also great if you appreciate nature as the foliage attracts a lot of wildlife, which enjoy the fruit and berries from the well-irrigated trees.”

Golfing doesn’t get much better than Royal Westmorland’s world-class championship golf course – a 7,045 yard par 72 course of unrivalled beauty, with views of the shimmering ocean from every hole. Masters Champion Ian Woosnam, a homeowner at the resort, declares the course has some of the best par 3’s he has ever played and that the course demands the use of every club in his bag. At the heart of the course, is an elegant, colonial-style Clubhouse with sweeping views over the fairways to the azure Caribbean Sea.

Paul B. Altman, Principle from Altman Real Estate and Savills in Barbados says: “At Royal Westmoreland the quality of the golfing experience and the high level of resort maintenance continue to support an increase in values for property owners. Other significant reasons are the restaurants, bars, pool and gym options, tennis and even an on-site rum shop. Of course, the beach facility is also a major plus. But most of all the superior golf service remains Royal Westmoreland’s main strength.”
