First there was America’s Polar Vortex and plummeting temperatures and now we’ve got the UK’s weird and dreadful weather, and the whole lot topped off with the snowy Sochi Winter Olympics. It’s enough to have turned men’s heads to long johns.
Last year they became fashionable. This year they’re just downright practical and every man should have a pair at the ready for chilly days at home or for trips abroad, especially for winter sports. So says Adam Davies, founder of the Deadgoodundies.com website which specialises in men’s underwear.
“Long johns used to be considered Grandpa Pants, the sort of thing you’d see in a spaghetti western. But then menswear designers started to pay attention to them and long underwear became fashion,” he says. “But at their heart, long johns are still basically leg warmers. But now they look a lot better, feel wonderful and there’s much more choice.”
Since America froze and the UK became waterlogged, sales of long johns have shot up. Deadgoodundies sells them all year, not just in winter, topping up repeatable classics with seasonal ranges in smart navy or grey, bright colours like red and cheerful tartans. There are full ankle-length versions and a shorter mid-calf option.
As Adam explains, the warm underwear theme has also extended with a useful (grown up!) version of the ubiquitous onesie – all-in-one underwear. “This combines a t-shirt or vest style top with a boxer brief bottom. The advantage is there’s no gap so your back is kept warm and there’s still easy access.”
